Dog is Love

Recently, I’ve seen the “Dog is Love” bumper stickers around.  I also saw the “A dognastic nose there is a dog.”  I was a little concerned about what the meaning behind these bumper stickers were.  I guess you could say I’m a little sensitive to the bumper sticker issue.  Why you might ask?  I really despise the bumper sticker “wars”.  Particularly the “war” between the Christians and the apparent anti-Christians who have been warring with their car decals.  Let me explain.  It started with the innocent display by Christians of the ancient Christian symbol of the “sign of the fish.”

picture 1

I was fine with that.  There is nothing wrong with putting an innocent symbol of identification on your car.  There is a great story behind the Christian fish symbol – click here.  But, apparently the use of the fish became so great, it annoyed many anti-Christians (particularly when they found out what the fish symbol actually was).  So, here is where the war began and the 2 things have happened that I really despise.  First, the anti’s took a sacred symbol of somebody else’s faith, and consistent with their character, defiled for their own purposes in order to ridicule and offend the Christians.  They created the Darwin fish.

  picture 2

It’s all fine and dandy to believe in Darwinism and evolution and whatever.  FIne.  But make your own symbols.  It is wrong to take somebody else’s sacred symbol and intentionally distort it.  Yes, you may hate Christians and God and whatever else, but you should at least believe in respect.  But then thing #2 happened, which I despise, and completely wish would have never happened.  The Christians retaliated.  Whatever happened to “turn the other cheek?”  The Christians created the Truth Fish.

Instead of “repaying evil with good”, the Christians decide to one up the anti’s and attempt to show the superioritiy of our faith system by paying back the anti’s with our Truth trumping theirs.  Now I’ve known people who have had the “truth” fish.  And I regret they had it.  And I really think we need to remove those decals from circulation.  The Truth decal is certainly not WWJD.  And, for that matter, the anti’s should remove their Darwin decals and create their own symbol instead of intentionally defiling the Christian symbol.

Anyway…so I was suspect when I saw the “Dog is love” sticker since Christians have the bumper sticker, “God is love.”  But, fortunately, “Dog is love” is nothing more than an innocent attempt at grabbing attention for animals in need of adoption.  Whew.  I was relieved.  Do check out the website for “dog is love” and consider adopting an animal.  I think the reason I saw so many stickers recently is that I was in Asheville, the headquarters of “Dog is love.”

Finally – very funny t-shirt sold at the Mast General Store in Asheville  – “If you’re too weird for Asheville, you’re too weird.”  I agree completely.  If you’ve ever been beyond Biltmore House in Asheville, towards downtown, you know why this t-shirt is SO true!

Google knows all?

Okay, they don’t really know all, but seriously, they know more than you think!  If don’t believe me, check this out.  They know more than where you live – they have it on film.  Go to google.com, type in your address, click the link, and then look for the “street view” link.  They haven’t gotten every where in the USA yet, but they have in our area.  Apparently they have paid a couple of guys (or gals) to ride around in a car with a video camera strapped on the roof and get panoramic video of every street.  You can actually pan the camera down and see the vehicle the google guys are driving.  Pretty cool and maybe a little disturbing!

Anyway…thought you might like to know.

Have some fun with church signs!

I found this site while surfing a new blog this week!  You can create your own church signs and save them to your computer and send them to your friends.  Anyway…I’ve had fun playing with it as I’m going to use some of my church signs in my sermon tomorrow!  Here’s a sample!

What do you think about polls?

I found a site this morning that allows you to create polls.  We have a poll on our church website, but I don’t find it to be an effective tool.  It seems to me, that you need a lot of traffic to really make a poll worth while.  I like the polls that ESPN does on thier website and that they broadcast on Sports Center.  But, they have 1000’s of people vote on their poll.  So, if you don’t mind, would the 1000’s of you readers of “Anyway…” click here and take my first “Anyway…” test poll???  Thanks!

More Answers

I mistakenly left my devotional materials at the office yesterday, but never fear, I have all i need on my computer and the internet for mental and spiritual stimulation as I seek God today.  So, I looked up my favorite devotional guide online, My Utmost for His Highest.  While there, I noticed that the host site, RBC Ministries, also had an “Answers to Tough Questions” column.  I’d seen it before, but wanted to mention it here in case it might be a useful resource to any of you.

Anyway…speaking of devotional resources for your computer…one that i use is The Rick Warren Bible Library.  It’s a little more expensive than you might want, but there are a couple of cheaper options.  Really cheap is the Bible Explorer 4.0 Limited II at around $11 bucks.  Mid-range in terms of pricing is the Bible Explorer 4. 0 Premiun Edition at about $90.  I have purchased a copy of the Limited edition and may provde you with a review in the near future.  There are a ton of resources on these programs that include books, commentaries, Bible dictionaries, Bible encyclopedias, and numerous Bible translations.  I love having all these resources with me on the go, rather than just having them sit on the shelf in my home or office.

I Was Hoping…

I was hoping to have a nice blog entry from my Wednesday lunch invite, but no luck.  Russ had invited me to attend a fundraising luncheon by the Durham Convention and Visitor Bureau for which Russ’s company Maestro Productions was working.  The drawing card to the event was the 20th anniversary of the movie “Bull Durham” and that Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon were suppose to be there.  Alas, the stars were no shows.  Honestly, no big loss.  I’m not one to get really star struck, but it would have been interesting to get a feel for how the stars came off up close and personal.  Anyway…despite the lack of “stars”, the honorees at the event were Ron Shelton and Thom Mount who wrote, directed and produced the movie.  They were quite entertaining with their stories of how the movie was written and how it came together.  Bull Durham has been called the #1 sports movie of all time by Sports Illustrated.  It is an entertaining film, but definitely earned it’s “R” rating.

Anyway…thanks for the invite, Russ.  Next time, let me volunteer instead of just come and get a free, hot, I mean, cold, meal.

Unrelated, here is a pic of our connection group from 2 weeks ago during our grill out!  Great steaks Ayrton!  And Aidan, I think I have your hat at my house!

Seven Years Ago today…

I married my wonderful bride! Happy Anniversary Sweetie!  Yes indeedy!

Anyway…about 7 and a half years ago, while in pre-marital counseling, our counselor encouraged us to write down 10 reasons why we wanted to marry our spouse-to-be.  I don’t know if she remembers all my reasons, but they still all hold true today.  Here was my list:

Top Ten Reasons Why I Want to Marry Courtney:

10. She loves Jesus more than she loves me.

9. She is patient and understanding of me.

8. My family loves and approves of her.

7. I love her – both romantically and in commitment.

6. She is a person of character and integrity.

5. She is selfless, respected by others, and respects others.

4. She is a hard worker.

3. We share similar values.

2. We share similar likes.

1. And to top it all off, she is beautiful too!!!

That is exactly how it read over 7 years ago.  And like I said, it’s still holds true today.  She’s the best.  I love her!

Cyber Hymnal

Our church is such a mixture of people with varied spiritual backgrounds!  As a rule, most of what we do at our church is consider “contemporary.”  By contemporary, I mean that we have a worship band instead of a piano, organ and chior.  We sing mostly current Christian music and only occasionally mix in an old hymn, usually performed with a contemporary twist.

Anyway…a couple of us were discussing in small group a few weeks back about old hymns that we love and miss.  While we do mix in the occasional hymn at church, I think people miss out on the rich Christian tradition that the old hymns pass along.  Some of the lyrics are so amazing – I wish everyone could know them.

So, if you get in a nostalgic way, go to Cyber Hymnal to find so many of the old hymn with lyrics and instrumental accompaniment.  It’s not the flashiest of sites but it may take many of you on a trip down memory lane.

Brian Clemens Memorial Golf Tournament

Brian Clemens Golf

Tomorrow Tim and I will join Joe Shields as his guests at the Brian Clemens Memorial Golf Tournament.  The golf tournament proceeds go to help The Inter-Faith Council for Social Services.  The Inter-Faith Council serves the Chapel Hill and Durham communities in many ways, including a place for men to go to find hope and healing from addiction, emergency shelter for women and children, and community pantry services.  Thanks to Shamrock Painting for sponsoring us in the tournament!  I’ll let you know how it goes!
