What a Deal!

I heard a statistic today. The fellow said that if you go to a restaurant and like it, you will usually tell about 3 people about it. Then he said, if you go to a restaurant and have a bad experience, you will tell 7 people about it! Well, I found a great deal, but not at a restaurant. But, it involves food! I found out not to long ago that Target will sell you a small bag of popcorn for $1.07. Not a bad deal. But then the young lady behind the counter told me I could get a “combo” that included a small popcorn and a small beverage for $1.08! Wow! Only a penny more! So, if you want a snack, go to Target!

Quote From Chambers

The quote below is from today’s reading in My Utmost for His Highest. Thought it went well with what I wrote earlier about our worth.

“If the Spirit of God has ever given you a vision of what you are apart from the grace of God (and He will only do this when His Spirit is at work in you), then you know that in reality there is no criminal half as bad as you yourself could be without His grace.”
– Oswald Chambers

Who is Worthy?

I was reading in the book of Revelation this morning. In chapter 5, the author, John, is having a vision of God’s throne room. God is on the throne and holds a scroll. Then a strong angel shouts out, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll?” The answer in verse 4 states that, “no one was found worthy.” A few verses later, the Lamb (Jesus) enters the scene, having been crucified and resurrected. The audience in the throne room begin to sing, “You are worthy…”

I think this idea of worth is where a lot of people struggle to understand God and the Christian faith. We put a lot of “worth” into things and people. Here in the States, even the worst criminals have rights and are “worthy” of being treated with some measure of respect and decency – even if we are sending them to their death.

And I believe there is “worth” in all of us. I believe God finds worth in us too. He values us. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to me why he values me (and some others), but He does. He proves his love, our worth, and His placement of value on us through the gift of His Son. Jesus didn’t “die for nothing.” We are something. God loves us. We have worth.

The trouble is – we aren’t “worthy” of that worth that God places on us. When it was time to open the scroll, NO ONE was found worthy. There was no one in heaven or on earth that was worthy to open the scroll. Let me say that again – NO ONE was found worthy. Not Billy Graham. Not the apostle Paul. Not George W. Bush. Not your grandmother. Not your aunt who makes the greatest pies in the world and has never harmed a fly. NO ONE was found worthy. Do I have worth? Yes. I’ve made that case. Does (did) your grandmother have worth? Yes. But we are not worthy. We couldn’t have opened the scroll. We can’t worth ourselves into God’s presence.

What I’m trying to get at is this – so many people have a hard time admitting they are not worthy – or their grandmother, or their aunt, or whoever. We all “sin.” We have all turned from God. We are worthy of one thing – rejection. Our sin separtes us from God. We are qualified for punishment – not opening scrolls or marching in to God’s presence. It would be good if we could come grips with our own, and everyone else’s, sinfulness. We are all in this together. We are all in need of forgiveness, salvation, redemption. And that is why the Lamb was crucified. He carried our sin, he took our punishment. And He imparted to us His worth. And that is how we come to God. Through the worth of His Son.

I’m not worthy, but I am so glad that Jesus was, and is, and is to come. Find your worth in Him today, and pray for others to do the same.

World’s Second Greatest Book

Clearly, my opinion is that the Bible is the greatest book ever. I’m curious – what do you folks out there think my 2nd favorite book could/should be? In other words, what book do you think is a must read for me??? I’d love to know!

Book Look

I’ve been asked to post the books that I recommend in my sermons on my blog. So, as we go along, I’ll occasionally put a book up here that has helped me in my walk with God. So here’s the first – The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. Practicing the Presence is all about learning to stay connected with God throughout our day. That no matter what we do, or where we do it, we can maintain a constant connection with Christ. It’s been awhile since I read Practice, but I remember it being a very odd book. It was written probably 2 or 3 centuries ago and details the determination and practice of a monk named Brother Lawrence to learn to experience God in his routine and daily experiences. You can click here to see it on Amazon.

Developing Spiritual HABITS

Don’t forget that next Sunday we will begin our series called, “Developing HABITS That Will Change Your Life.” This morning we looked at “What is the Importance of the Spiritual Family.” We learned about how being connected with a church helps us to grow in our faith. But we also learned that we have a responsibility for our own spiritual growth as well. That is where the HABITS come in. These HABITS are the tools we need to learn to walk with God on our own. Habits can make or break us. Learning to develop spiritual HABITS will enable us to grow deeper and deeper in our relationship with God.

Our One Year Anniversary

This morning we celebrated our one year anniversary at The Bridge! Our first weekly service was last year on Easter, April 16th. This past year has been amazing to see how God has been at work in and through us! We’ve had some highs and lows but, in it all, God has been at work changing lives. I am so blessed to pastor such an incredible and growing community! We treasure every person that has connected with us over the course of the year.
Anyway…thanks to everyone who contributed to our celebration today. I’m sure I’ll forget someone, but here goes:
Stacy and Amanda for organizing the kid games
Russ for running sound
Jeff for running the media
Lauren for making the cakes
Tim for getting the food and drinks catered
Eddie and Dee for the tables and chairs
Tim for creating the slideshow of the past year
Our setup/breakdown team for the extra hard work
The children’s workers for their diligent work with our youngters
Cary, Amanda and Jeremy for leading worship
Did I forget anyone???

New and Improved Worship Band at The Bridge

Not that the old way of doing things wasn’t great, but our new and improved worship band did an awesome job yesterday in their debut! The music sounded great and I’m really proud of all the team and their leader (Amanda, I mean, Cary)! Thanks to all the team members – Cary, Amanda, Jason, Jeremy, Tony, and Linda! And thanks to our sound man, Russ! Anyway…I don’t have any pictures including the whole worship team so this one of Cary and Amanda will have to do until I get a new one! Thanks guys! I love the worship!

Jonah

I was reading through the story of Jonah and came acrossed this verse today – “…for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. ” (Jonah 4:2b – NKJV). Isn’t it great to know that our God is a gracious and merciful God? He is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness. He is so patient with us and so willing to forgive. Where would I be without his grace, mercy, lovingkindness, etc?

World’s Best Devotional

I’ve got it listed under the links on this blog, but I feel like I really need to highlight Oswald Chamber’s devotional book called “My Utmost For His Highest.” His writing style is sometimes hard to follow – like reading the King James Bible if you’re not use to reading the KJV. But the content of what Chambers has to say is almost always outstanding. I hope you will go and buy yourself a copy of his book or read it online.
