Day 2

“This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life…” – Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Good morning everyone! I hope you rested well! And if you’re not reading this in the morning – Good afternoon or good evening! I hope you’re having a great day.

Yesterday, I wrote about our church’s vision to be “outwardly-focused.” We want to guard against our church (or us as individuals) becoming so inwardly-focused that we lose sight of sharing God’s love with the world around us. Over the next several days, we are going to focus on the “core values” that The Bridge attempts to adhere to. These values were developed in some of the earliest meetings of our church as we sought to clarify what we thought ought to be important to us for the lifetime of our church.

Each morning (day or evening) before you sit to read this devotional and talk to God about what you are learning, would you pray this simple prayer?

“Lord Jesus Christ, speak to me.”

The core value that tops our list is:

We exist for God’s glory.
We value having a Christ-centered focus, believing God will honor us only as we honor Him first.

The WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM answers the question, “What is the chief end of man?” The answer, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” The Bible clearly teaches that we were made by God and for God. God is what life is all about. In His goodness, God has provided us with a lot of other things to enjoy, but our primary purpose in life is to know Him and honor Him with our lives. This is part of what it means to bring Him glory. The verse above from Deuteronomy is one of my favorites. “The Lord is your life…” It has been my experience that so many people miss this point. Too often we want God to be something we add to our life, rather than being our life! Being a Christ-follower is not about a religion. It is not simply about attending a certain number of religious gatherings or holding to a certain list of do’s and don’ts. It is about a relationship. It is about knowing God and realizing that He is what life is all about. He is life.

How about you? How would you describe your connection with God? Is it more like a religion, or is it a relationship? Can we live our lives for God’s glory? Will you glorify Him with a relationship instead of a religious system?

30 or so days of devotionals – Day 1

So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. 2 Peter 1:12-15

When the Peter (one of Jesus closest campanions) wrote those words, he wasn’t remotely talking about what I am about to write about! But everytime I get repetitive in my teaching, I think back to these words! I am such a slow learner so often! I need to be reminded of the most basic things over and over again before they sink in and become a part of my life. And even then, I often forget the things I’ve learned again!

So, let me be repetitive. The vision of our church is to be”an outwardly-focused church, constantly adapting its methods to reach this generation and the next. We will partner with others to start new churches.” And just a couple of Sundays ago, we looked at a passage of Scripture that gave us some wisdom about being outwardly-focused with our lives and church. It was Colossians 4:2-6 and it gives us 3 bits of advice we can follow to be outwardly-focused.

Bit of wisdom #1 – Talk to God about your community! Colossians 4:2 says to “Devote yourselves to prayer.” The number 1 best thing we can do to aid in reaching the outside world with the good news that “God Loves You” is to pray for them. Prayer shows our dependence on God. It shows that we know only the power of God can change a life. Will you talk to God about your community? Who can you pray for? A neighbor? A friend? A relative? A coworker? Will you begin to pray for your community this next 30 days?

Bit of Wisdom #2 – Don’t waste your opportunites! That’s exactly what Colossians 4:5 say, “Make the most of every opportunity.” Remember that “Hot” sign at Krispy Kreme??? Isn’t that one of the seven wonders? Who doesn’t like to see the “Hot” sign on? And when, God tells us, “don’t waste your opportunities,” I think he’s telling us to be “on.” Just like that “Hot” signs brings joy to peoples lives, we want our lives to be “on” and ready to shine the joy that only Christ can bring into their lives. God will give us opportunties everyday that we can shine His light into the lives of others.

Bit of Wisdom #3 – Talk to not-yet-Christ-followers! Colossians 4:6 tells us to let our conversations be “full of grace” and “seasoned with salt.” They only way we can do this is to actually have a conversation! God wants us to be building bridges into the lives of others. He wants them to taste the grace that we know and see the change that He has made in us. So begin with a conversation! Get out there and build some relationships! We were made for relationships! Talk to folks and pour yourselves into their lives! Show them what grace is all about!

God loves you and he loves those outside of our “church” walls as well! I hope that we will all continue to grow in our love for our Savior and God and for those He loves – those inside and outside the church!

Pastor Mike

PS – To join me in reading the New Testament through in the next 30 days, you need to read 8-9 chapters a day! And if you don’t think you can do that many, how about just starting with 1-2 chapters a day??? And don’t forget the nuts and bolts (and washers) of prayer we talked about on Sunday!

Speaking Engagement

Wow! Time really flies when you’re having fun! I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I’ve written in my blog.

Anyway…

Please know that you are invited to attend a speaking engagement I have later this month. It is with a group called GatheringRaleigh that meets at Crossroads Fellowship in North Raleigh. GatheringRaleigh is primarily for young adults who enjoy progressive Christian worship and relevent teaching. Childcare is provided. This will be my first time at GatheringRaleigh, so I really have no idea what to expect! I love surprises. From what my friend Dave (who organizes the events) tells me, it should be a rockin’ good time!

Been reading my journal

I am not a very disciplined journaler. I love journaling – I just don’t take the time to do it enough. Anyway…I’ve challenged myself to journal everyday this month. So far, so good. My journaling is mainly a way for me to record spiritual insights and to self reflect about how I am growing or stagnating in my walk with God. I have been reading some of my older entries from 2+ years ago and it’s pretty cool to see how God has worked in my life and how many prayers He has answered.

Thought for the day (taken from on old journal entry):

“Our Master never asks of us so much work that we are left with no leisure for sitting at His feet.” – Andrew Murray

Hope you find some time to sit at His feet today.

Reading…

I’m currently attempting to read “A Short History of nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson. Extremely fascinating book so far. Bryson attempts to give us the remotely laymen’s version of the science of how everything that is, is. More later.

Quotes of the Day

Just a few “quotes of the day” for today:

“Heaven is not here, it’s There. If we were given all we wanted here, our hearts would settle for this world rather than the next. God is forever luring us up and away from this one, wooing us to Himself and His still invisible Kingdom, where we will certainly find what we so keenly long for.”
– Elisabeth Elliot

“The Bible talks plentifully about joy, but it nowhere talks about a ‘happy Christian.’ Happiness depends on what happens; joy does not.
Remember, Jesus Christ had joy, and He prays ‘that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.'”
– Oswald Chambers

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose”
– Jim Elliot

Has the Church gotten the Message wrong?

Yesterday I was at a leadership conference. One of the main speakers talked about what he considered a failure of the Church today. He pointed out that in Jesus day that crowds would flock to hear Him teach. That what Jesus was teaching was creating a stir and had the interest of a watching world. Yet, the message we seem to be proclaiming in the church today is not causing a stir, and people are not flocking to our buildings to hear our message. The world is not watching or listening. And very little life change is happening. Even for those who are attending our churches, very little life change seems to be happening. He went on to ask, “Why?” Why don’t people flock to hear our message? Why isn’t life change happening? The answer – he felt that the church is actually getting the message wrong! He felt the problem with our message to be that we had boiled the gospel message down to “you need to get right with God, pray this prayer and you will have a seat in heaven.” Is this really all the message is about? Is it all about making sure people can say they believe a basic few doctrines, pray the right prayer, and then they get the promise of heaven? Is that what Jesus taught? Or is that just part of the message? His view of the message of the gospel went something like this. The Old Testament (OT) has three main stories – The Exodus, The Exile, and The Priestly/Sacrificial stories. He pointed out that we seem to only focus on the Priestly/Sacrificial story. He focused on the Exodus and Exile stories and referred to them as ones of “journey” and “marginalization and restoration.” He talked about how these were stories of God delivering people, “saving” them, and bringing them back to new life in the OT. He felt that this part of the message was something that we were overlooking in the Church. He then went to the New Testament and referred to an account of Jesus’ life where Jesus talks about his purpose. In Luke 4 it reads, “The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'” He asked us, which of the three main OT stories does what Jesus read here refer to? They seem to reference the Exile and Exodus stories, but not to the neglect of the Priestly/Sacrificial story. The gospel of Luke then goes on to record Jesus performing miracles – healing lepers, raising the dead, setting people free. And, surprisingly, he never once stops after helping someone and asks them if they believe in him and would they like to pray a prayer to make sure they have a seat reserved for them in heaven. The conclusion of this matter and the point of the speaker, I think, was for us to consider just how complete our message is. Are we offering a life changing message – reconciliation, restoration, deliverance, etc. Or are we just offering the Priestly/Sacrificial story part of it – salvation – without truly being concerned for the whole person and the wholeness that God intends for peoples lives. Too often, we have people pray a prayer, tell them that they have a seat in heaven, and their lives never change. We have not taken the time to offer them the Exodus and Exile story. We have not told them about how God cares about every detail of their lives, and how He wants to bring wholeness in their lives where there is brokeness. We have not told them how God can deliver them from their brokenness and their marginalization.

Anyway…If you’re out there broken and marginalized, I hope you will discover that God cares about you. And he wants you to experience renewal and wholeness. He wants you to be made new and experience Him. You are already on a journey. He wants to journey with you.

Ow! – Car Accident and Heaven

I’m sorry that I am either so lazy or so undisciplined to blog more often (in case there are any readers out there, somewhere!). Anyway…got in a car accident this past Saturday. Got rear ended, and slammed into the car in front of me. Fun, huh? My son seems fine, Courtney is having a little neck soreness, and my neck and back hurt. I don’t want to be injured, so I’m hoping that the pain will just go away so I don’t have to deal with it.

Anyway…as I like to say…heaven. I’ve been thinking about heaven quite a bit lately. My thinking has been stimulated by a book on Heaven and a web link on the topic. I recommend both to stimulate your thinking.

George Castanza, hospital, and what’s is worng with our world?

When it comes to blogging, I often feel like George Castanza when he called Jerry and got his answering machine. He said something to the effect of, “Hi Jerry. It’s George. I’ve got nothing to say.” Click. Most of the time when I think about blogging, my mind goes blank. It makes me feel like my life is incredibly uninteresting. And to many, my life would be plain. I ate lunch with one of my best friends yesterday, and another friend from high school. It seems to me that their lives are much more interesting than my own. I am quite entertained by them. But, I am very satisfied/content with my life. I am who God has created me to be and He is shaping me into who He wants me to be. I’m grateful for the life I have.

Anyway…having said all that…I started reflecting on what I could write about. What is happening in my life? Is there anything interesting or “blog worthy?” What really comes to mind is two things. For one, someone I know just went into the hospital on Monday with all these strange symptoms. At first it seemed quite serious, and the hospital folk didn’t seem to know what was wrong with her at first. It really made me worry. What if? What if she is really sick? What if she does not recover? How will that impact her family? Why would that happen? Please God, don’t let anything bad happen. And it didn’t. She seems to be fine and recovering now and will be home soon. But what about all those “what if’s?” It seems we don’t take life seriously enough. We don’t take it seriously enough to appreciate it and to enjoy it. We don’t take time to thank God for what we have and to truly love those around us. We (I) take so much for granted.

Also, the second thing I thought of. Something really bad happened to someone I know just a few days ago. I can’t share the details, but suffice it to say that there are bad people in the world who do all kinds of horrific things. It kills me that our society/world just seems to shrug their shoulder at the problem of evil. It as if we have just resigned to the fact that it is out there and there is nothing we can do about. And really, what can we do? Hopefully, we can keep ourselves from being idiots and harming other people, and maybe, we can invest our lives in others and share with them the love of God and they will turn from their wicked ways and lead a fruitful life. Why do people do such awful things? What possesses them to harm others? It amazes me how selfish we all can be. I’m as guilty as the next guy in that category.

Well, as you can tell, I’m frustrated. I think about the news of late and the school killings, and other murders, and abductions, and geez, what is wrong with people? We (our society) needs some life change. We need some repentance. We need to get right with God. Let’s all pray for our world and that God would be gracious and offer us all a second (or third or more) chance.

Anyway…

TGIF

I’ve got to give some e-props to a friend of mine named Kevin. He is a senior at Athens Drive High School. He has been the youth “intern” at the church I use to work at and he was the speaker at their youth worship night this past Wednesday. Long story short, his message was really great and from the heart. And during the message, there was a powerpoint slide on the screen that included the letters “TGIF. ” I leaned over and asked my wife, “Why do they have a random slide with ‘TGIF’ on it?” Finally, at the end of his message he told us that “TGIF” was there to remind us to wake up every day and say, “Today God Is First.” He encouraged us to wake up each morning and think, “TGIF.” Then he encouraged us to take it a step farther and wake up each morning and stand up in our bed and scream, “TODAY GOD IS FIRST!” Well Kevin, I’m not in bed still this morning, but I’ll still give it a shot. Let’s see what happens…Ha! That was funny! Courtney was in the kitchen banging around and Jackson was babbling, but all went silent when I yelled, and Courtney said I scared Jackson and he clung to her legs! Don’t worry, he’s fine now and back to watching “Higgly Town Heros.”

Anyway…TGIF. I hope we all will attempt to put God and others in front of our own needs each day. And thanks to Kevin for allowing God to use him to speak to our hearts. Have a great day!
